Mid-Year Resolutions.

The last time I trekked uptown to visit Central Park - one of my favorite places in New York City - was nearly a year ago. One year. (That's me, pictured below, relaxing during a summer picnic.)

As someone who loves this city and is proud to live here, I'm embarrassed to admit this. I do get out and try my fair share of new things, but when it comes to enjoying the city to its fullest, I sometimes feel I could be doing more. This week's Equals Record post touches on this predicament, and what I'm planning on doing about it.

An excerpt from the new post: Last week, when June 1st rolled around, it occurred to me that six months had passed since New Year’s, and I wondered, do people ever make mid-year resolutions? In a way, isn’t this an ideal time to assess what the year’s been like thus far? To have a resolution refresher? To make amendments? It seems that way to me, and in the spirit of kicking off the second half of 2012 on a positive note, I’m going to add one more goal to my original list. In the next six months—and over the summer, especially—I’d like to push myself to engage more with the city I live in. In terms of music, art, and culture, New York has so much to offer. And yet, I see maybe two or three concerts per year. I can’t remember the last time I visited Lincoln Center. I’ve never been to the Met. It’s shameful, really. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t know how long I’ll call this city home—I may as well enjoy it as much as I can while I’m here.
See more at the Equals Record, here. Thank you so much for reading!

  2. p.s. I tried to leave a comment at Equals, but the database is down? Anyway, what I wanted to say was that I shall start commiting to regular exercise! Extremely boring, I know, but kind of necesssary...

  3. What a great idea! Who doesn't let those fitness goals or whatever other health resolutions start to slip by April or May!? It's funny that one of my plans for summer was to do more in my city, DC. Sometimes it's easy to forget just how much a large city can offer, while focusing only on a few sections.

  4. You read my mind, Shoko! I love mid-year resolutions. Who says that January 1 is the only day where we can better ourselves?

I haven't been too good at keeping up with mine (specifically taking my after-work-walks), but mid-year resolutions are less rigid I feel!

  5. I know what you mean. When you live below 23rd Street or like me, way, way below 14th Street, you feel like it's such a hike to go anywhere. But really if you just pick a day and pick a destination you can get there in no time. And I never regret going anywhere. I'm always so glad that I decided to make the trip.

  6. I feel you!! Except sort of in the reverse. I'm far too tied to Manhattan and need to give some love to the outer boroughs. This summer, I'm coming for you, Brooklyn.

  7. Ronnie, not boring at all! That's a great one. Best of luck!

Monica, that's so true. I never regret going anywhere - only the other way around. I venture past Union Square so infrequently - although I guess that's about to change! :)

Molly, yes, come to Brooklyn! You won't be disappointed, I promise!

  8. I love a mid-year resolution. It's always the right season for a little self improvement, right? Immersing yourself in the city more is a great one too! You'll love the Met, just be sure to do it in small doses. Good luck!

  9. Ok,no excuses Shoko! you need to come hang with me & my boys! we explore any and everywhere in this fab city of ours. You need to come hang with us..lol & we live in Queens, and have to take a bus to get to the train and have a 20 month old in a stroller. Life is too short {I've battled with Crohns disease last 12 years, so I truly believe in living in the moment} and this city is a cultural playground for all ages.
I'm all about frugal finds too, fam of 4 living on a budget! I wish we couldv'e gone to the museum mile that was on Tuesday, one of these years we will. I hope you explore it more!I've lived here all my 30yrs. of life and still will never see it all, one of the reasons I won't let the hubby drag us to Arizona. Ha!
