Sad Girls.

Transfixed this morning by Yelena Bryksenkova's lovely, poignant illustrations - I came across these three via Sad Girls, a new drawing collective comprised of Brysenkova, Leah Goren, and Tuesday Bassen (they'll soon be publishing a zine under the same name).

There's something both cozy and lonely about these drawings, isn't there? (Looking at them reminds me of this post.) I feel like this last one could easily be of me, working away by myself most nights until the wee hours - minus the adorable sleeping baby elephant, of course.

Visit Yelena's blog, here, and Sad Girls, here. Found via Wolf Eyebrows.

  3. What an awesome collaboration! I can't wait to see the zine when it comes out. That last one could very well be me, too. I can only dream of having a sleeping baby elephant in my apartment!

  4. These are beautiful! I feel like I could have easily been the first one in high school. I always did my work on the floor

  5. This series does make me feel a little sad- between the use of watercolor and the what seems to a variety of portraits of being "alone."

It also reminds me of this article I read in Slate magazine about a day ago on the difference between being single and being lonely: http://www.slate.com/articles/life/culturebox/2012/08/being_single_and_being_lonely_are_not_the_same_thing_an_excerpt_from_michael_cobb_s_single_arguments_for_the_uncoupled_.html

  6. These are beautiful. Is it strange that I don't really find them sad? I get more of a contemplative, reflective, even meditative feel from them. If I hung one in my work space, I think it can even be motivating!

Hm. I guess that is strange.

  8. I like these. I recently discovered Leah Goren's work and really admire her ability to tell a story through her art. These are lovely.

  9. The illustrations look so amazing, so much details. The sleeping elephant is just the cutest.

But why are they so sad? Makes me a little bit sad too. :(

  10. I really enjoy sad art, especially when I can relate to it. I'm really feelin' that first one. I've been there. And like everything else, that teeny elephant in the third picture made me "awwww". =]

  12. I think it could be all the colors she uses - it's all very muted. I love her work! Speaking of sad songs here's my favorite one: Band: A Girl Called Eddy, "Golden" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKCdWO7ilTQ
