Wondrous Words.
Run by an English major (and a girl after my own heart), Otherwordly is a site that pays homage to "strange and lovely" words. For example, did you know that "jentacular" is an adjective meaning "relating to breakfast"? (I have a feeling that's one I could use in my day-to-day life.) Or that "apodyopsis" 'is "the act of mentally undressing someone"? You learn something new every day.

Ahhh, this is so cool! I totally have "l'appel du vide" whenever I am up high on something, except it's more the fear that I will have the desire to jump...which is really the desire to actually jump, deep down, methinks. =] This is seriously the coolest, I love learning about new words and phrases, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteEsprit d'escalier... you mean there's a noun for that?! I could use that daily.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome find! I've been searching for a word a day calendar but this is so much better. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteselcouth :)

ReplyDeleteAah, I love this! I really like "jentacular," I will have to find clever ways to work that into daily conversation. Thanks for sharing this. I can't wait to learn some new words from it.

ReplyDeletethanks to this ortherwordly, i now know that groak (v. to stare longingly at someone who is eating in the hope that they will ask you to join them) is a word. amazing! my inner word nerd is so very satisfied.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you guys enjoyed this as much as I did!
ReplyDeleteMolly, I didn't see the entry for "groak" but what a BRILLIANT word. I groak daily, just FYI :)

ReplyDeleteI always wondered whether there was a word to describe that comeback that comes too late. and you found it! now if only there was a word to describe the frustration that ensues when that esprit d'escalier finally comes to mind!
ReplyDeleteI've heard of Alate, but I'm not familiar with other words!

Thanks so much for sharing this! I collect words I like in a little notebook, so you've given me quite a few to add to my list. :) The last word I collected was xenization - the fact of traveling as a stranger. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect find!! I'm going to completely annoy my boyfriend for the next week or two with obnoxious synonyms hahah
ReplyDeleteCristina, "xenization" is a GREAT one.
ReplyDeleteKerri Lynne, you're doing him a favor - you're teaching him something new :)
